These are more commonly used in a thesis or dissertation rather than an essay.

Examples of good research papers

In addition, this stage will help you determine whether there is a possible flaw in your argument. If you find there is a flaw, you can adjust your argument or topic at this stage.

Most researchers do not conduct a great deal of research at this point - it is only to ensure the paper is on track and to get a sense of the literature.

A thesis statement is a statement of your central argument - it establishes the purpose and position of your paper. If you essay on the appropriateness of scoring rubrics with a research question, the thesis statement should answer it. The thesis statement should be concise, contentious, and coherent.

That means it should briefly summarize your argument in a sentence or two; make a claim that requires further evidence or analysis; and make a coherent point that relates to every part of the paper. You will probably revise and refine the thesis statement as you do more research, but it can serve as a guide throughout the writing process. Every paragraph should aim to support and develop this central claim. A research paper outline works as an effective guide to use during the writing process.

It is essentially a list of the key topics, arguments and evidence you will include, divided into sections with headings so the paper is planned before you begin writing. A research paper outline can help make the writing process much more efficient, so it is worth dedicating the time to create one. Read our article on creating a research paper outline.

Paragraphs are the basic building blocks of research papers. Each one should focus on a single claim or idea that helps to establish the overall argument or purpose of the paper. Here is what a paragraph should look like. Hover over the sentences to learn more. This impact is particularly obvious in light of the various critical review articles that have recently referenced the essay. Your first draft should not be the last, as you can polish later on.

The main goal at this stage is to:. You do not need to start your paper at the introduction. Start writing where it feels most natural for you - some prefer to finish the most difficult sections first, while others choose to start with the easiest part. The MJSW could provide any support or assistance deemed necessary to help the person cope with job stress, including counseling or working beside the person for short periods of time.

In addition, the MJSW was always accessible by cellular telephone, and could be called by the participant or the employer at any time. At the end of three months, each participant was post-tested and given the option of staying with their current job with or without Supported Employment or moving to the sheltered workshop. There were participants in the final sample for this study, in each treatment.

There were 9 drop-outs from the control group and 13 from the treatment group, leaving a total of and in each group respectively from whom example of research papers pretest and posttest were obtained. Due to unexpected difficulties in coping with job stress, 19 Supported Employment participants had to be transferred into the sheltered workshop prior to the posttest. In all 19 cases, no one was transferred prior to week 6 of employment, and 15 were transferred after week 8.

In all analyses, these cases were included with the Supported Employment group intent-to-treat analysis yielding treatment effect estimates that are likely to be conservative.

It is immediately apparent that in all four cases the null hypothesis has to be accepted - contrary to expectations, Supported Employment cases did significantly worse on all four outcomes than did control participants.

The mean gains, standard deviations, sample sizes and t-values t-test for differences in average gain are shown for the four outcome measures in Table 1.

The results in the table confirm the impressions in the figures. Note that all t-values are negative except for the BPRS where high scores indicate greater severity of illness. The results of this study example of research papers clearly contrary to initial expectations. The alternative hypothesis suggested that SE participants would show improved psychological functioning and self esteem after three months of employment. Exactly the reverse happened - SE participants showed significantly worse psychological functioning and self esteem.

There are two major possible explanations for this outcome pattern.

Examples of research papers

SE cases may have to go through an initial difficult period of adjustment longer than three months before positive effects become apparent. But a second explanation seems more plausible - that people working full-time jobs in real-world settings are almost certainly going to be under greater stress and experience more negative outcomes than those who work in the relatively safe confines of an in-agency sheltered workshop.

Put more succinctly, the lesson here might very well be that work is hard. Sheltered workshops are generally very nurturing work environments where virtually all employees share similar illness histories and where expectations about productivity are relatively low. In contrast, getting a job at a local hamburger shop or as a shipping clerk puts the person in contact with co-workers who may not be sympathetic to their histories or forgiving with respect to low productivity.

This second explanation seems even more plausible in the wake of informal debriefing sessions held as focus groups with the staff and selected research participants. It was clear in the discussion that SE persons experienced significantly higher job stress levels and more negative consequences.

One lesson we might take from this study is that much of our contemporary theory in psychiatric rehabilitation is naive at best and, in some cases, may be seriously misleading. But for most people SMI or not work is at best tolerable, especially for the types of low-paying service jobs available to study participants. Future research in this are needs to address the theoretical assumptions about employment outcomes for persons with SMI.

It is especially important that attempts to replicate this study also try to measure how SE participants feel about the decision to work, even if traditional outcome indicators suffer. A citation is just the name of the author and the date of the publication placed in parentheses like this: Author, date. Its purpose is to document a source briefly, clearly, and accurately. If you copy text from one of your sources, then place it in quotation marks in addition to following it with a citation. Be sure you understand and avoid plagiarism! Do not copy another person's work and call it your own.

Always give credit where credit is due! Most teachers want a research paper to have these sections, in order: Title page with the title of your project, your name, and the date Your report Bibliography Check with your teacher for additional requirements such as page numbers and a table of contents. Have you referenced all information copied from another source and put any phrases, sentences, or paragraphs you copied in quotation marks? You can start your introduction with a few sentences which announce the topic of your paper and give an indication of the kind of research questions you will be asking. This is a good way to introduce your readers to your topic and pique their interest. In scientific papers this is sometimes known as an "inverted triangle", where you start with the broadest material at the start, before zooming in on the specifics.

It provides the reader with an indication of the content of the essay and encourages them to read on. Consider referring to key words. When you write a research paper for publication you will be required to submit it along with a series of key words which give a quick indication of the areas of research you are addressing. You may also have certain key words in your title which you want to establish and emphasise in your introduction. Define any key terms or concepts. It may be necessary for you to clarify any key terms or concepts early on in your introduction.

You need to express yourself clearly throughout your paper so if you leave an unfamiliar term or concept unexplained you risk your readers not having a clear understanding of your argument.

Writing a Research Paper for Your Science Fair Project

Introduce the topic through an anecdote or quotation. If you are writing a humanities or social science essay you can find more literary ways to begin your introduction and announce the topic of your paper.

It is common for humanities essays in particular to begin with an illustrative anecdote or quotation that points to the topic of the research. This is a variation of the "inverted triangle" technique and can generate interest in your paper in a more imaginative way and demonstrate an engaging writing style.

If you use an anecdote ensure that is short and highly relevant for your research. It has to function in the same way as an alternative opening, namely to announce the topic of your research paper to your reader. For example, if you were writing a sociology paper about re-offending rates among young offenders, you could include a brief story of one person whose story reflects and introduces your topic.

This kind of approach is generally not appropriate for the introduction to a natural or physical sciences research paper where the writing conventions are different. Part 2 of Include a brief literature review. Depending on the overall length of your paper, it will be necessary to include a review of the existing literature already published in the field.

This is an important element of your paper which demonstrates that you have a strong knowledge and understanding of the debates and scholarship in your area. You should aim to indicate that you have a broad knowledge, but that you are engaging in the specific debates most relevant to your own research. It is important to be concise in the introduction, so provide an example of research papers on recent developments in the primary research rather than a lengthy discussion.

A strong literature review presents important background information to your own research and indicates the importance of the field. Use the literature to focus in on your contribution. A concise but comprehensive literature review can be a very effective way to frame your own research paper.

As you develop your introduction, you can move from the literature to focus in on your own work and its position relevant to the broader scholarship. By making clear reference to existing work you can demonstrate explicitly the specific contribution you are making to move the field forward. You can identify a gap in the existing scholarship and explain examples of research papers you are addressing it and moving understanding forward. Elaborate on the rationale of your paper.

Once you have framed your work within a broader context you can elaborate more fully on the rationale of your research and its particular strengths and importance. The rationale should clearly and concisely indicate the value of your paper and its contribution to the field. For example, if you are writing a scientific paper you could stress the merits of the experimental approach or models you have used.

Stress what is novel in your research and the significance of your new approach, but don't give too much detail in the introduction. Part 3 of State your research questions. Once you have indicated where your research sits in the field and the general rationale for your paper, you can specify the research questions the paper addresses.

The literature review and rationale frames your research and introduces your research question. This question should be developed fluently from the earlier parts of the introduction and shouldn't come as a surprise to the reader. An example of a research question could be "what were the consequences of the North American Free Trade Agreement on the Mexican export economy?

A good research question should shape a problem into a testable hypothesis. Indicate your hypothesis. After you have specified your research questions you need to give a clear and concise articulation of your hypothesis, or your thesis statement.

This doctoral programs thesis a statement which indicates your essay will make a specific contribution and have a clear result rather than just covering a broader topic.

If possible try to avoid using the word "hypothesis" and rather make this implicit in your writing. In a scientific paper, giving a clear one-sentence overview of your results and their relation to your hypothesis makes the information clear and accessible.
